I'm going to have a more extended con report with all sorts of stuff, but I know what you REALLY WANT. You don't care about William Shatner or Wil Wheaton. You just want me to tell you that Gareth looked great and was hilarious. Right? I KNOW YOU DO. So here's the details on his panels. The bit about me meeting him will be in the longer write-up, probably.
Friday panel
My Flip ran out of battery a minute in, which is why there is an awkward break, but I got the vast majority of the panel. Vimeo limits uploads, so here's the first part now and I'll put up the second part when I can!
Gareth David-Lloyd at Dragon*Con '11 from Eldarwannabe on Vimeo.
Saturday panel
I hope someone else uploads a video or pics, because I've not got a thing from it. Link me if you see something?
Gareth David-Lloyd and Mark Sheppard were together in a single room, bantering off each other. That alone was worth coming for.
Apparently some internal BBC policies have changed, and now they charge for meals. Gareth commented that it's a good thing he was killed off so he doesn't have to deal with it. :D
Mark mentioned that we fans are crazy (in an awesome sort of way) because there he was in The Middle of Nowhere, America, filming for Who and these fans drove up an RV and waved and held up signs. :D
Plus, apparently Mark Sheppard's dad is cranky and cool, and Mark was the one who suggested he play Old!Canton.
The thing that stuck in my mind the most is this. GDL and I occasionally disagree on Ianto. Not in big things, but little things, once in a while. Someone asked him about Submission, specifically about the Carlie bits. They wanted to know what it was like, because normally Jack is the one with old lovers popping up, and now it was Ianto's turn. Gareth answered that he actually thought Carlie cheapened the Ianto/Lisa relationship, and he had fought for it to be toned down in the radio play. He said he refused to say some lines and implied that he toned down his delivery deliberately.
WOO! I mean, obviously there are some people that will disagree, but I interpreted the relationship as a mostly one-sided crush on Carlie's side, and mostly friendship on Ianto's side. And it was his delivery that allowed me to have that interpretation!
One of the things I completely forgot to say to him on Sunday was a thank you for doing that. I agreed with him and appreciated it a lot.
I think this is also the panel in which he ended up talking a bit about how he, from growing up in the "anglicized" area of Wales, (South/East from what I've gathered, everything hooked up to the M4?) hasn't really had any problems getting roles in the UK. But, and he didn't say this in so many words, actors from more North or Western areas of Wales, the ones with thick, difficult accents, are normally stuck in roles on BBC Wales shows. We know Gareth can do an English accent or smooth out his own until it's pretty easy to understand, but that was a fascinating glimpse into the thought process in the UK industry.
And I think this is when he spoke about how difficult it is to get to North Wales. (This might have been Sunday, I haven't finished re-listening to it.) Because the ONLY HIGHWAY in Wales goes through the South, basically from London to Cardiff and a few nearby places. North Wales is all roads and it's a long, annoying process to get around. I wanted to jump out of my seat and say "I SPENT A WEEKEND IN LIVERPOOL TO GET TO SEE YOU AT WREXHAM, YOU KNOW!" but I didn't. Getting to North Wale is hard.
Sunday
This wasn't a typical panel, but rather a live audio commentary given by Gareth on Countrycide, which he has claimed as his favorite episode since forever. I'm not a bit horror fan, actually. I'm fairly neutral on the genre as a whole. *shrug*
I've got a few video clips on my camera which will be hopefully uploaded at some point after the rest of the Friday post. BUT I do have a complete audio file of the whole thing that I recorded to my phone. I'm not the first one, someone beat me to it, but I'm willing to figure out how to upload it if people still want me too?
(WARNINGS, guys, for anti-Gwen and anti-Jack comments. He even says something mildly disparaging about Tosh. It's fairly obvious Gareth's pandering to the crowd, but I was surprised at one or two things. (He compliments Burn Gorman at one point, though! Ha!) How did fandom's negativity about Gwen get prevalent enough for that? *is distressed*)
No matter how much Gareth makes fun of Wales in the commentary, I WANT TO GO TO THERE AGAIN. (Actually, now I want to drive out to some pub in the middle of nowhere and take off my shoes and curl up with a beer, which he talks about. And I think beer tastes like pee. Apparently I'm up for anything if someone talks about it fondly in a Welsh accent.)
Before he started, he auctioned off the defaced Children of Earth poster from Wizard World Chicago to raise money for his band's new CD, and I managed to record that as well. As he was planning to toss it, I think he might be surprised by how much it went for.
He ALSO mentioned that he'd love to bring the band over to the states, and specifically asked us to politely pressure Dragon*Con for next year.
...
!!!!!!!!!!!!
IF THIS HAPPENS, WE'RE ALL GOING TO D*CON NEXT YEAR, OK? I can attempt to show that they are weirdly better in RL than they are in video, and
pocky_slash can make fun of them anyway!

This post will be updated with the rest of the video for Friday, and possibly pictures at some point. If you want to link to any video/pics/etc. of the three panels that you find online, I'll link to them here for posterity. I like saving links. :)
