I just read my first Inception fic that concisely has the military backstory take place after Don't Ask Don't Tell was repealed and it was just a tiny, little detail that fired a million pleasure-circuits in my brain. This fandom and it's attention to world-building details is amazing.

Seriously, how is Inception fandom still cranking out magic??? Sometimes I want a "Unified Theory of Fandoms With Active Fanfiction Cultures" to figure out what is the magic click combination that leads to fic-creation and longevity. (And then I remember that I don't' want to watch Supernatural and also I am incredibly picky about my fanfiction and the minute the magical combination is unlocked, it will be utilized by our capitalist society to suck every possible dollar from the fandom collective.)

And then I think, eh, let some things stay a mystery.

So, I follow this one Inception fic writer on tumblr because I really like a lot of her stories and she updates fic snippets on her tumblr and I don't have the patience to wait for it to get to AO3 ten months later. She has built some really interesting universes, that kind that I sometimes think about walking to school.

A few days ago she asked if anyone had headcanons of her work and I was like "OH BOY DO I."

So I sent her an anon message mentioning that I have headcanons for this slow-build fic universe she has. She said I should share them. For science.

And now.

Her followers.

Are asking about me.

I have a nickname.

And I've never written any of them down? I have headcanon daydreams in a lot of fandom universes, but actually building a fic involves time and editing and I'm teetering uncertainly between just hiding away in my anon-ness (no one will find this here, it's livejournal) or actually just jotting down my ideas and sending them over. I know how those other fans feel. But in case it isn't obvious yet, I haven't written fic in a while.

*teeters*

Fandom stuff? I'm halfway through the second season of Orphan Black! I'm watching reeallllyyy slowly, but it's amazing and awesome and the best thing ever, etc.

Also also also, it's the beginning of the Inception anniversary fandom EXPLOSION. And instead of maybe actually participating outside of my blog and lurking all over the place, I've got to figure out, like, my life.

Although John Green's video today was inspiring. It makes me want to bring the things I want to do back into rotation. But like, want to talk to me about feeling overwhelmed, John Green? Because I am SO READY for that showdown.

AND I WAS BITTEN BY A HARRY POTTER PLOT BUNNY. I might even post it when I finish because the fact that it's a totally unpopular shipping choice won't matter. NO ONE READS ANYTHING HERE ANYWAY. Lalalalaaaaaaa.

ETA: Viola Davis is playing Amanda Waller. I think this just increased my list of Superhero Movies I Am Willing To Pay Theater Money To See. Good job, DC. You get...one movie! Until Wonder Woman, at least. I'm willing to see that no matter how grimdark you get.

That awkward moment when you were frantically speed-reading an amazing new chapter in a long-running WIP just before class and the professor walks in and begins as you are frankly in the middle of some interesting character exploration kink stuff and you really want class to end so you can figure out what happens next but mostly oh good lord why did you stop there?????????

Last week was just full of fandom references. Which was good and probably helped me SURVIVE. /1L

By fandom!

Inception: I got cold-called in Contracts for this case all about contract interpretation and whatnot and I slipped in the word “specificity” when arguing why the contract failed.

Ok, it’s a small reference. Unless you’re an Arthur/Eames shipper (which is what, 98% of the fandom?) in which case I basically flirted with my professor.

Torchwood: There is term in civil procedure called Long Arm Jurisdiction (actually super interesting because my CivPro professor is AWESOME) and every time he writes “LAS” on the board I’m get this pang of nostalgia for the last Last Author Standing and chatting with [livejournal.com profile] sariagray and active Torchwood fandom and it’s a lot of emotion for civil procedure, OK?

X-Men First Class: The librarians dug up a bunch of cool stuff from our archives so we could ooh and aaah when we got our library tour. One of the documents was handwritten meeting notes from the Kennedy administration taken DURING the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Ok, that one also counts for general history geekery.

HAND. WRITTEN. NOTES.

GAH THIS PLACE HAS SO MUCH STUFF.

Someone wrote a fic in which Dom originally was Arthur's babysitter! This is my favorite headcanon because it is hilarious. (Mal as a babysitter is not half as funny as Dom. He'd squint at Arthur to go to bed and Arthur would completely ignore him. All LOLZ.)

I woke us this morning from a very vivid dream in which I was involved in mind heist and I was training some newbie who wanted to extract from a good friend of mine (who had taught me how to extract?) and I was all ~conflicted~ if I should call my friend and ask permission to waltz through his brain or if I should surprise knock him out or something.

.........

So, too much Inception fic?

NAAAAAAAAAAAAH.

The other night my roommates and I tried to watch Bronson (mostly for Tom Hardy.) I kinda liked it and wanted to finish, but it didn't make it past the "half-hour test" for the others -- to artsy and WAY too violent. I'll get back to it when I can.

So instead I convinced them to watch Four Brothers with me. Four Brothers! That's another one I came to via fandom. There was a lot of crossover writers with The Outsiders fandom back in 2007 when I was obsessed with S.E. Hinton, so when I finished reading everything in The Outsiders section on ff.net (YEAH. THAT OBSESSED) I wandered over to Four Brothers.

Rewatching it, I realized how badly it fails the Bechdel test, but it did inspire me to dig up this one fix-it I never finished.

I forgot the rules of finding decent fic on ff.net -- you start by finding one good writer and looking at who they favorite and who favorites them and start branching out. Normally it takes a really long time before you explore one entire bundle. (And only go through the actual fandom page if you're empty-handed and desperate.)

And now I'm browsing through a Four Brothers bundle. Let's be honest -- it hits the "brothers who will do anything for each other" AND "families of choice" buttons. (It is only now, while I'm in a canon with a very blatant family of choice, do I realize how many Inception fics stapled "Family of Choice" onto the Inception team. It's arguable, I guess, but their connection was far looser than some fics made them out to be. Huh.) Any day now I'll have to check what all the actors have done in the last few years.

Dear Inception Fandom,

You all seem to insist that there aren't any projections in limbo. Which is completely not true. Seriously, re-watch the opening scene of the movie.

I'll wait.

SEE? PROJECTION PEOPLE!

Love,

Me

P.S. I do like how you guys deal with a lot of other issues, though. I cheer every time I get a story that mentions how poor Eames had to hold the Browning forge for a week on the top level after the inception. It addresses my one pet peeve about the film. Good job, fandom!
eldabe: Dream lad, suprised. (Dream Lad!)
Someone just commented "lol there is no more Torchwood fandom" on fandom!secrets.

Well, the fact that there are always fics cluttering up my AO3 dreamwidth feed speak otherwise, but THIS SHALL NOT STAND.

*cracks knuckles*

I'm organizing my life, so fandom life should be in order as well, yes? And now you guys will get to see what my To Do lists look like.

Cut for possible spoilers as to my posting future? )

Dear Dreamwidth Communities,

Putting "We are just like community X over on Livejournal!" is NOT A GOOD WAY FOR ME TO KNOW WHAT YOUR COMMUNITY IS ABOUT.

For something completely different, anyone interested in being a spaghetti wall* for a Torchwood fic? I have vowed to not work on any of my longer stuff until this is nearly complete, so I'm at a standstill here.

It's gen, it takes place pre-series, it stars a minor-ish lady character, and I'm also trying to find a job so I'll probably be rubbish at being consistently in contact.

*listens to crickets chirp*

Or I can just post more rambles about Joseph Gordon-Levitt's FACE. That also works.

___

*Spaghetti wall = I will throw ideas/snippets/rants at you and see what sticks? I will also gush adoringly at you and thank you a bajillion times. I do not promise to take your advice. I should really try to sell this better.

I sometimes wish I could write some sort of paper about how mpreg fic is a sort of angry feminist response to men, a sort of "HAHAH LET'S SEE HOW YOU LIKE IT BROS-WITHOUT-UTERUSES" but I know it's really just a kinky corner of the haphazard parallelogram that is the slash community in fandom.

But dudes. It's everywhere.

(Still wandering around Inception fandom, why do you ask?)

LOOK HERE'S A META WITH EVERY JGL OUTFIT IN THE MOOOVIE. (It's also one of those fabulous "DEAR FANDOM UR DOING IT WRONG" metas. Hee. ♥)

___

Um, I am writing Torchwood fic and stuff. I promise. It's just that plot is so hard to make pretty. HOW DO YOU PEOPLE DO IT?????

/constantly resisting the urge to tell not show.

So, I saw Inception.

Good thing I read a lot of fic and a few articles before I saw this movie or I would have haaaaaaated the ending. As it stands, it's interesting but not especially frustrating.

Really I just want to draw hearts all over Joseph Gordon-Levitt's FACE. That man can act! Also Arthur presses Ianto buttons all over this joint. Suits! Competance! Adorable smiles! Arthur is even a researcher. Becoming a JGL fanperson would be difficult though. He has a bajillion already. (I've already met two straight fanboys who are just as squee-ey over him as I am. I LOVE FANS.)

Cut for the mildest spoilers ever. )

Promise I'm not leaving Torchwood or anything. But even though I know Inception fandom is probably just as dead, it's nice to feel excited and knowing there's enough stuff on LJ/AO3 to not need tumblr. Also, everything I know about suits I learned from this Inception post. Someone linked to it way back when. As in intro to a fandom, it was clearly a good one.

Hello, my name is Eldarwannabe and I am mildly addicted to Inception AU fic. To clarify, I've not seen Inception. Although I suppose I should fix that at some point*.

I've found fics because I stumbled on a few AU recs and I figured "Why not? Don't need to know background for AUs!" and then fan interpretations of Arthur hit a whole lot of my Ianto buttons, so I kept reading them, and here we are!

I DON'T KNOW EITHER.

Well, I sort of do. I've run through a good solid chunk of Torchwood fic, and sometimes I want to read something utterly new, with few preconceptions and unlike Merlin and Teen Wolf, I'm wandering around blind and giddy And unlike Avengers, I don't care about the slash because I don't care about the characters. It's a slightly older fandom, so there's lots to dig through.

AND MOST OF ALL there are a lot of really well-written gorgeous AUs. Which is virtually all I'm reading as I haven't seen Inception.

MY LIFE I DON'T EVEN.

* - This is no longer true. I wrote this post a few weeks ago during hiatus, and I wanted to preserve the original sentiment. I CAME TO THIS FANDOM FIC-FIRST.
