So, Beyonce has a song called Daddy Lessons and, like, to be clear, I respect that she's talking about a very specific experience as a Black woman in America.

But also? Every time I listen to it?

I think about Lian Harper. It's about a complex relationship between a daughter and her father and also guns, so like...I mean! There's also lines about alcohol which, given Roy is an addict, also twing for me every time.

It makes me think of how Lian might think about her dad if he dies and she has to deal with the complicated trauma of loving a man who arguably couldn't quite superheroing to give her a stable life.

The pre-chorus is arguably the part that works the least but

He said, "Take care of your mother
Watch out for your sister"
That's when Daddy looked at me

It just makes me think of Cheshire and her son, who is Lian's half-brother and who I would absolutely expect to show up in twenty years if Lian even exists in canon at that point (who knows.) Which like, no one thinks about Lian circa-2010s anymore but I always imagined Roy finding about about that kid and kidnapping him for his own safety and then he can join Lian and Damian in the "our moms are evil" club.

(ETA: I just went digging and apparently Lian isn't gone anymore?? Wikipedia says she's a bartender with amnesia and wikia says she's on an alien planet with Ollie so WHO KNOWS. Is Ceridan back?????? Probably not, talk about obscure.)

Dear DC Comics,

You don't need the Justice League to sell me a Teen Titans movie. Really. I will give you money anyway. I have been waiting A DECADE to give you that money.

But, if that's what it takes?. I will pay for Justice League vs. Teen Titans. I will only puzzle over Damien and Jaime for a few minutes. (DAMIEN WAS, LIKE, FIVE DURING THE NEW TEEN TITANS ERA. WHAAAAAAT.)

I will even forgive you not putting Dick in the disco-suit. Because we, the fans, DESERVE Dick in the disco-suit. Complete with those yellow feathers. DO YOU HEAR ME, DC?

Anyway, I haven't been paying an awful lot of attention to the DC animated movies, even though they have historically been some of the best DC media outside of comics. So it's nice to hear the news I'll get some Teen Titans.

Make a Legion of Superheroes movie and we're even.

Deal.

Apparently DC is rebooting Wally’s origin story? I mean, they are rebooting everyone’s origin story so whatever. And they are rebooting him as POC which is yay!

But they are rebooting him as a “troubled youth.” :/

Ignoring the racial implications of that, which are super important but are not something I feel really equipped to address, I’m still saddened. Because Wally’s origin story was THE BEST ORIGIN STORY EVER.

It was every fan’s DREAM STORY. It was giddy and delightful and POSITIVE.

(Yes, later it became more complex and twisty and then he was aaaaangsty and then he was a jerk face and then he was awesome and then he was disappeared and there’s stuff there I know I know but it’s his ORIGIN I’m talking about here ok?)

It was SO BRIGHT AND SHINY in the best of the silver age sort of way and just nooooo DC stop making everything so gritty. Not that you care about my opinion because I’ve not bought anything monthly since the massive disappointment that was the Amethyst Reboot. YEAH. SINCE THEN. FOR THE SAME REASONS.

JGL gave us a few tempting tweets last night, and later he confirmed that he signed on to PRODUCE the adaptation of Neil Gaiman's Sandman comic.

THERE ARE A LOT OF CAPITAL LETTERS NEEDED TO RESPOND TO THIS NEWS.

But I'll be internet-polite.

1. Preludes and Nocturnes? Really? L. and I agree that it is a poor choice. Perhaps the media res will work better on film but it took me THREE TRIES to get past that tread into the meat of the series.

2. IF JGL also ends up starring (as the internet refuses to let go of that possibility) L. and I also share mixed feelings. Because JGL is a crazy-diverse actor and he's good. He's very good. BUT ALSO, neither of us see him as Dream. Because...no?

3. If he's just a producer I am actually super-excited for him. He's been passionate about the film-making and creative processes for a while, he really thinks about this stuff and the man has connections in the biz. I feel like Warner Brothers wants to exclusive-contract him "Golden age of Hollywood" style. Bankroll his braaaaain.

4. SANDMAN MOVIE IS MOVING FORWARD. *flappy hands*

5. Please, please, please, please let it be good. It could be good. I think an HBO-style TV show might work best, but a movie has so much potential (and so much money) that this could be a really gorgeous opening into the Sandman world.

6. (They should make "24 Hours" into a mini-story similar to "The Deathly Hallows story" in Harry Potter. It would be horrible and beautiful.)

DC Comics is MOVING TO CALIFORNIA????

What.

What!

I mean, I remember when they moved part of their production out to CA, because I stuck my food in my mouth with a DC person talking about manga and CMX was part of the move (that is...a long story) but I never imagined they would be leaving NYC.

While I totally understand why the move is happening, and as a corporate conglomerate it's probably a good idea, I am instinctively against it. I think it's important for the core stories to be able to quality without the influences of the other stuff.

Not, I suppose, that that's been happening recently...

Actually, I should probably collect my thoughts before I write about them. BUT MOSTLY: WHAT.
eldabe: Image of canal in Venice (Default)
First, read this story about cosplayers being awesome.

:D

____

Ok, so it seems that the CW has cast an actress to play Sin in the Arrow series. My reaction to this news so far is mostly open-mouthed shock. They're casting an obscure POC female character for this series? Whoa. That was unexpected.

Obviously they're going to change the character around. (ROY HARPER, WHAT HAPPENED?) but I'm actually wildly curious where they're going to go with this. I'm hoping to catch up on Arrow in time for Dragon*con, but between some of the interesting stuff they're doing and the fact that my roommate is a big fan, I'll probably be watching it next season, at least.

On a related note, DC better step up its game or Marvel is going to take over movies AND TV, and then I'll never see a live-action Nightwing adaptation. AND THAT WOULD BE TRAGIC.
eldabe: Image of canal in Venice (Default)
So, my roommate, [personal profile] batyatoon and [personal profile] sdelmonte have all heard my excited rambles about how I would really love to run or help organize a fandom convention dedicated to the back-end of the fandom, i.e. fanworks, forums, fan discussion, fans etc.

And I haven't really seen anything like that* so I was super excited today when I heard about KudosCon, which is a fanworks convention. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

(*Last year there was a idea floated about doing a fan-track at Dragon*con. I would have totally loved to help, but D*C shot it down. Boooo.)

Now, there is no way in heck I can make it to Bloomington, MN, especially considering I am blowing all of my con-energy this year into a last Dragon*con hurrah, but I'm hoping it starts a trend and it goes well and stuff gets recorded to put online. And I'll even scroll through tumblr for con reports when I feel up to it!

Lookit!. It's so shiny and fannish! Their "about" sidebar is all "and this person did THIS fannish thing!" :D Tickets start at $40, and you can purchase them on Kickstarter.

Addendum: They don't EXIST yet, and they already have some form of a diversity statement and a harassment policy. And a privacy policy! Which is SO SMART for a fanworks con.

Slightly negative thoughts BELOW the cut! )

All that junk said, I would seriously love to attend every. single. panel at this con. For serious. Gah, I want fandom meta.

A friend posted this on my facebook wall with the headline "Cassandra Cain grew up."

I CANNOT DISAGREE.

Guys! Nightwing moved to Chicago!

It's like a smash-up of two of my favorite things. I know it's nu!Dick, but SOMEONE IS TRYING SOMETHING NEW OVER THERE THAT I FIND INTERESTING.

(Kinda want to check it out just so I can see if the artist incorporated any architecture. Because CHICAGO.)
eldabe: Image of canal in Venice (Default)
I'm doing some cleaning in my parent's house

And I found a ton of my con stuff from...2007.

REMEMBER WHEN CMX WAS A THING?

HECK, REMEMBER WHEN TOKYOPOP WAS A THING?

I'm sitting in a pile of bookmarks for manga that are now out-of-print and anime no one remembers. I found the HTML guide [livejournal.com profile] tinuviel8994 wrote for me when I started using LJ.

I found my printout of lyrics from the NANA movie, my Kryptonian-English guide, a map of Walt Disney World so old it's for MGM Studios, and a dozen maps of the Lord of the Rings Traveling Exhibition (circa 2004!).

I HAVE A MEGATOKYO CALENDAR. 2007! CMX!

I have ICV2 industry guides because I found those endlessly fascinating.

I found a flier for the "Veronica Mars Season Two Trading Cards" despite the fact that I don't buy trading cards and I missed Veronica Mars.

I also found a House of M sketchbook comic and colored pencils! NEW PUBLIC TRANSPORT ENTERTAINMENT.

I also found my old floppy disks! Guys, my childhood computer died a sad, lonely death but odds are good that on one of those floppy disks, my terrible fic remains.

I just need a computer capable of using a floppy disk. That's going to be a challenge.

I also found approx. 300 different magazines dedicated to the Lord of the Rings movies. They are useless and waste a ton of space, but I can't throw them out! *clutches*

In more recent news, I've been gifted with the 42 Things the Prove the Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the Perfect Man. I admit he's nearly too skinny for my tastes but the writer and I do agree about arms.

Also, he is a ninja. :D
eldabe: Image of canal in Venice (Default)
AS IN BROKE MY BRAIN.

John Barrowman is going to be in the new Green Arrow show! The one that I've been kinda LOLing about since the trailer came out because it looks like the creative team was basically told that Ollie is Batman, with arrows. (Which he was, sure, but he isn't now!)

LOOKS LIKE I'M GOING TO HAVE TO WATCH EVERY EPISODE.

THANK YOU FOR THE NEWS [personal profile] iceshade

Ok, bedtime now.

So, DC decided to cancel the trade collection of Legion Lost

AAAAAAAARGH.

Being a Legion fan is hard freaking work, is all I'm saying. Especially because I'm not willing to go bin-diving. I don't have the patience, I'm not organized enough for it, and I have already posted elsewhere about how MUCH BETTER trades are for readers than individual floppies.

*apply head to desk*
eldabe: Image of canal in Venice (Korra and Brave: My 2012 Animations)
DONNA DONNA DONNA DONNA!

And Supergirl (Kara, probably) and burrito-craving Batgirl/Barbara.

DOOONNAAAA.

And they have personalities and they are all ridiculous and I love them all. ♥
eldabe: Image of canal in Venice (Default)
I just passed an Asian girl on campus dressed as Batgirl!

Now, it was a "sexy batgirl" (complete with skirt) so unlikely that her choice was a deliberate callback to Cassandra Cain, but I froze when I saw her and stared mournfully for long enough to be creepy. I was tempted, for a moment, to chase her down and ask to take a picture to send to Didio. And ask if her choice was deliberate on the off-chance.

But I decided that I had creeped her out enough so I continued to run to physics class instead.
eldabe: Image of canal in Venice (Default)
So, apparently when I mentioned I was going to be sporadic, what I meant to say was "I will be so insanely busy and stressed from real life that I'm going to drop off the face of planet internet. Will try to send a postcard after the first physics exam! ♥" (I passed. The damage to my GPA remains to be seen.)

I can't wait for the day when professors can no longer assign me homework and essays and exams. And research. So. Much. Research.

I have been packing a lunch every day! Bought a second bento box to reward myself. I just need to find short plastic chopsticks to go with it for my next reward. (Possibly if I manage to shove the gym back in my schedule somewhere.)

I need to start work on my thesis. Unfortunately, the three areas in media I am most interested in writing about are comic books, the internet or fandom. In my department, there is one ok professor who has done work on fandom, and one professor I have never met who does work on the internet. Forget about comics.

I like film! I do! It's just not my passion. I'd rather write about online fan reactions to the new Clark/Lois lack of status quo. Although I might be too close to that one.

But that's not what this journal is for. Fandom!

FIRST, LOOK AT THIS PICTURE. LOOKIT. I don't know who took it, but I LOL that GDL gave the expression for the pic. This is what Ianto would look like in the UNIT cap if Ianto wore t-shirts and con badges.

I have been keeping up with shows and such. The one week I fell behind on Who, Roommate cast me baleful looks until I caught up so we could talk about it. :D

Cut for ridiculous rambling and some negativity about the latest season of Doctor Who. )

But I adored the scene with River and Amy hanging out. Finally, some family bonding!

I'm having a good time puzzling through how the heck the infinite time loop between the first episode and the last episode even makes sense. Because did the Doctor send the cards to post-Petricore Amy? OMG, did the Amy&Rory timeline start from episode six and then end at ten and then go back to 1/13-5? O.O Must investigate this by watching the whole season again!

...in like three months. :(

Oh, and I have been following the new DC 52 as much as I can. Still don't know what happened to Stephanie and Cass although I heard Simone did a decent job with the Batgirl comic. Still not buying it. Still love Simone. It's possible. Kind of upset about the Starfire and Catwoman things. Am not going to start on a crazy analysis of the Male Gaze now.

*disappears in a poof of smoke*

I have a new icon! As I only have six (on Livejournal), and I have no plans to ever have more, I tend to make icons I like and stick with them for a while. But Buzz had limited applications, so here's to my new animated fandom icon. (My Dreamwidth icons haven't been organized yet, so this is mostly about my Livejournal ones)

All of the images are from the promotional materials for the upcoming TV show The Last Airbender: Legend of Korra and Brave, the upcoming Pixar film. I wanted to find a third animated something to put in there, but apparently these are the only two animated projects coming out in 2012 starring women. So instead you get my first attempt at a gif ever. I decided to not even bother with words.

I haven't had an HP icon in years, but I would like one for Pottermore posts. And I kinda want my Torchwood one to have, y'know, my favorite character (Ianto) in it. And I want a Stephanie Brown icon for comics posts, but I plan to never sacrifice my Nightwing icon (the first I ever made) and I like having Tim as a generic geeky icon when necessary.

I like having a fannish-neutral default icon, but I'm digging around my travel photos to find something to replace the canal in Venice. Castle in Scotland? Or Wales, maybe? Hmmm.

Anyway, for posterity, here's the icon: Photobucket

ALSO I HAVE JUST FOUND OUT THAT APPARENTLY GEORGE PEREZ HAS DRAWN THE BADGE FOR DRAGON*CON THIS YEAR. I WILL FRAME IT THE SECOND I GET HOME. I MIGHT ASK HIM TO SIGN IT BEFORE I INFORM HIM THAT HE IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE COMIC BOOK ARTISTS EVER AND THE NEW TEEN TITANS WAS MY FIRST FAVORITE COMIC. I'M GOING TO GO OVER THERE AN FLAIL FOR A LITTLE BIT.
eldabe: A picture of Aqualad from the Teen Titans TV Seires (Aqualad with pants!)
HAHAHAHA DC COMICS.

A single fan at SDCC might have influenced DC's current lack of female creators and characters lined up for the relaunch.

AW YEAH COMIC FANS.

I have been having lots of thoughts on the relaunch since it was announced, but my overall feeling is still my basic "go big or go home." Because DC wants to overhaul their whole line except their precious Batman and Green Lantern, and they want to have at least three different Robins/ex-Robins running around but they want Barbara Gordon back as Batgirl, and they want all their Important Stories to still be canon, (like "Death of Superman") but they want to split up Clark Kent and Lois Lane.

AGAIN, THEY WANT TO SPLIT UP SUPERMAN AND LOIS LANE.

I don't know if I've mentioned this enough, but Lois Lane is one of my top DC characters, probably in some sort of completition with Stephanie Brown and every single person in Birds of Prey. And Tim and Dick are probably in there somewhere. (But happy!Tim and happy!Dick. Not these brooding fellows who keep popping up.)

Lois Lane doesn't need Superman to be awesome. Far from it. But she and Clark make a wonderful, balanced couple and I'm a huge fan of having characters grow up and make life changes. And this is a million times worse for me than the whole Spiderman fiasco because I'm a much, much bigger Lois fan than I ever was a Spidey fan. (I'm a DC. What can I say?) And we might not see as much Lois if she's not even given the "romantic interest" part. AHHHH.

More than that, DC needs to either commit to this overhaul or not. It could be great, actually, despite all the naysayers. Something like this could actually revitalize the slowly dying industry. But it's like DC doesn't geddit. 52 issues at once? Only semi-reboot? HAVEN'T YOU LEARNED YOUR LESSONS FROM ALL YOUR PREVIOUS CRISES, DC? This is what made every single reboot so confusing! You need to ACTUALLY STREAMLINE when you do these things!!

Also, if you at the very let Stephanie Brown be present as Spoiler (or in some capacity, at least), I won't forgive you for what you are doing to Barbara, but I would consider reading something you're putting out under the Batman line. Just saying.

ETA: Just some links related to this issue that I don't want to lose.

Newsarama musings while this thing was getting big. Also links to Laura Hudson's response to Didio on the issue.

I find this article most interesting for the male backlash against these protests. It's a bit disheartening to hear about.

And then Newsarama covers the positive response from DC. We'll have to see where that goes, obviously.

LOOKIT, EVERYBODY! REMUSLIVES23 GAME ME A KISS ACROSS AN OCEAN! *tackles with love*

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D \o/

ETA: AND ALSO FROM SARIAGRAY! *dances*

In other, slightly less fantastic news, the Brittrack at Dragon*Con put up their tentative 2011 schedule!! (They have separate tracks. Yes, it's that huge)Cut for an assessment of the Brittrack panels by likelihood of GDL attendance. )

Yes, I will have to work to go to things outside of this track. *glances through other tracks*

At a glance? I'm interested in American SF Media, Animation, Anime/Manga, Electronic Frontiers Forums, Independent Film Track, Kaleidoscope (shut up), Podcasting, Readings, Robotics, Science, Sci-Fi and Fantasy Literature, Silk Road: Asian Cinema and Culture, SPACE, Tolkien's Middle-Earth, Trek Track, Writer's Track, Young Adult Literature.

I hear sleep isn't a priority at these things anyway.

(One day I will figure filking out. I will. But it is not this day. FORTH EORLINGAS

For some reason, there isn't a comic book track, which puzzles me greatly. Considering some of their comic book guests (George Perez, Amanda Conner, Darwyn Cooke, Karl Kesel...etc.), where do I go for information on panels and stuff? Confusing.

There is also an X-track. Every time I see it, I think, "Oooooh, an X-Men track!" And when it's not that, I think, "Oooookay...a bondage track?" Turns out it's an X-Files/paranormal sort of track. They don't mention Fringe, though, so I'm not sure I'm going to check up on them.

In preparation for this convention, I have decided to try and watch ALL of Stargate this summer. Hey, it's all free on Hulu! I spent a lot of time fretting about the watching order and the later movies and continuity, but I'm still only halfway through season one, so I'm not sure how good the odds are that I'm going to get to season seven anyway, and I'm choosing not to worry about it yet.

This will allow me to check out panels in the Star Gate: Multiverse track! WOOT! *adds to list*
