eldabeHave you guys seen this yet? For the Greater Good is a Harry Potter fan video about Ariana Dumbledore's death. I highly, highly recommend it.
It's not perfect. The accents, for one, are…not accurate. And Gellert's accent is particularly hilarious, because he's not even English.
The scene isn't how I pictured it at all. I pictured a cramped and chaotic scene in an old-fashioned sitting room, or something similar. But I actually admire their use of a beach as setting.
It's effortlessly dramatic, with the wind and the sand giving them lots of natural background motion and action. The wide-open spaces give them a lot of space for dramatic posing and cool effects. Plus, it probably kept the budget far lower than it could have been.
I did think that Albus disagreeing with Gellert was a little bit too convenient. Albus was still a teenage jerk at this point, it was Ariana's death the pulled him out of it, not Gellert's cruelty.
There were so many things I did like! The costuming was brilliant. They looked old-timey and upper-class in a vaguely time-unspecified sort of way.
Gellert was really a jerk. He didn't care about Ariana and he acted appropriately awful to Aberforth.
I just adored the depiction of their spells. The actors totally embraced it, and whoever choreographed it actually thought about what things they could do to make it look dramatic, you know? Flinging people at rocky outcroppings? Pretty awesome.
The interpretation that Albus loved Gellert was not subtle. But I squeaked in fangirl delight, because it was so good for a bunch of melodramatic teenage geniuses. (And Aberforth. Poor Aberforth. With Albus so conflicted, he didn't stand a chance.)
Lastly, their choice as to Ariana's death. I always pictured it as far, far more ambiguous. A cacophony of light and spells and exploding knick-knacks. But it would have been difficult to portray in film, so I can support their depiction. They tried to give her a bit of a motivation and personality, although there wasn't an awful lot of room to do so.
Harry Potter fandom has always been this explosion of creative energy. It's been really fun to watch the fans get older, and technology get cheaper, and see what they do with it. (Sorted This Way, anybody? :D :D :D)
