Fandom latched on to the woobie character. They do that, especially where there is a lot of fic potential. And Avengers fans have been writing Bucky-is-alive fic since the first Captain America movie. I think the title was partially a red herring and partially a nod to the fact that this was so clearly taken from Brubaker's story, even though a lot was changed. (Cap fought Batroc in the beginning of both of them!)
Hey, wait. I remember when the original comic was coming out and fans were in UPROAR that Brubaker DARED to bring back Bucky. I mean, I think he did a fantastic job but I was the newest of fans when this started. I do think the plotline of the comic was more interesting, but just like the comics ended up having to deal with the Civil War fallout interrupting Cap and Bucky's issues, the movies had to let the still-unclear overarching SHIELD story interrupt Cap's personal mission of saving Bucky. I also admit that like how they are having Cap adjust to the 2010's instead of the 1970's. We're a very different world.
You're allowed to be grumpy and have high standards! It's fandom! You care a lot! Etc. :D
