MOCKINGJAY PART II: WE SPLIT IT INTO TWO MOVIES BECAUSE WE CAN.
Loved it. And I want to acknowledge that I have no ability to be at all discerning when it comes to those movies because basically the more I think about it the more I absolutely adore the commentary on media, and how it shapes our perception of war. It's basically a long running commentary on the modern-day media version of bread and circuses and I LOVE IT SO MUCH.
And as a movie, it gets this amazing extra layer of US watching the Hunger Games and the war and being JUST AS INFLUENCED by the media and the directing/editing choices and what makes us excited. Like, I know some people have complained that the message is too obvious but when I rant to my friends about how much I love that part, they aren't always even paying attention to it.
So I don't think it's strong enough, sometimes. I would be okay with more social-commentary-about-media-through-post-apocalyptic-YA! :D
My curiosity about how Panem moves on is ALL ABOUT the politics of it. How do they combine 14 very disparate cultures peacefully? What kind of propganda is the leadership creating? DO people seek out Katniss every time they don't like what the government is going, and ask her what she thinks?
GAH SO MUCH POLITICAL LOVE.
. My family was like, we want to see The Martian and I'm home for break, why not? I was pleasantly surprised. It has a lot of science for a mainstream film and it's much funnier than you expect a film on the topic to be. And also? The hero is a botanist. What's not to love?
