Ok. I have an extended reaction post due in which I talk about episodes 3-6. I have started and struggled to put up a post dealing with the fact that we have Death Camps shown clearly on both American and British soil in a show that I feel had no business crossing that line. I'm still working on these things.

But I've been avoiding all of you for a while now, because I'm still watching this show, and I have been avoiding spoilers by and large so my immediate reactions can remain my own while I have them.

And I loved this episode. There were flaws, quite a few, but I actually want to rewatch this episode. I went in with a pretty positive, excited attitude, and I've still got it, actually.

LOOK ELLIS ISLAND 1927. So, Jack's been on-planet for a while, already been "recruited" by Torchwood. And apparently they trust him to go off on his own and fulfill missions!

Look! An...Italian guy?

Ooooh, we have now Established that Jack's preferred method of flirtation is lying on top of people. It's crude, yes, but direct!

I love how Jack's accent isn't commented on. You would think that he wouldn't want to pass as Briti-WAIT. WAIT A MINUTE. WTF ARE YOU WEARING, JACK. W.T.F.

WORLD WAR II HASN'T HAPPENED YET. WHAT THE HELL IS THAT COAT. WHAT THE HELL IS THAT WHOLE OUTFIT. WHAT THE HELL, JACK. DOES THE RAF EXIST YET? *googles* OK. YOU GET NINE YEARS OF RAF EXISTING. BUT TELL ME - DID THEY HAVE THE COATS? BECAUSE THIS? THIS IS MY SKEPTICAL FACE.

That's...going to bother me the whole episode, isn't it? Fine, let us ignore it. POSITIVE, PEOPLE. POSITIVE.

Wait, I'm confused as to why Jack is forging his documents when Torchwood is OUTSIDE GOVERNMENT AND POLICE. Couldn't the...hmmm...1927...King, right? Couldn't the King just write Jack some papers. BY ORDER OF THE KING THIS MAN CAN TRAVEL PLACES.

Oh, Jack is falling in love with the dude's little town. Sounds like Boeshane, don't it?

And now the wrist-strap has MOAR POWAHS. Ok, I can swing with it. Look at that Jack grin!

Back to the present! So, Anwen is still the most adorable baby ever. Gwen is a little overly shocked to hear that Jack is being demanded. I think this might kinda invalidate every "captured by aliens, rest of the team to the RESCUE" plot we've ever had, because Gwen is acting like she's never had this happen before.

I do like that they are doing follow up on the camps. They keep dropping plot lines, but if you're gonna go that big, I expect massive follow up. My feelings remain mostly angry on this one.

Ignoring that, because heeeereeee's Jack in the present! Gwen brought him a snow globe in Wales and they need to bond over it. Outside. Snow reminds them of IantoOwenTosh. (WHOA THAT WAS SNARKY.)

I don't know why Gwen didn't just ask Jack to come with her to save her family. This is Jack. He should have just volunteered

Back to the past! That's a....nice room. Actually. Have you ever had a tenement tour? Also...people shared beds all the time back then. Also, also, Jack wouldn't do the "raised voice" thing because I'm sure Jack has encountered LOTS of foreign languages in his life. Speak clearly and slowly, sure. But loudness doesn't help.

Oh, look! Jack is warning about the stock market crash! And, World War II.

JACK LIKES EVERYTHING. JUST SHAG ALREADY.

Ooooh, real sexual build up! I'm...actually impressed. And the way Jack is being a little more careful than he might be in the present, I like that too.

ATTACK OF THE PHEROMONES, YES/YES? They should close the shades before they shag, though. Or not. They don't have to.

(And now fandom needs to know what counts for lube in the 1920's.)

This had, like, 5x the sex scene of the other one! Why wasn't this in the news for a solid week of headlines?

Oh, man, I really like this guy. I don't know why a lot of these comments about relationships haven't gotten though Jack's brain enough for him to geddit in the future.

JACK IS FROM A ~*MAGICAL ISLAND*~ NAMED TORCHWOOD. I'M REALLY ENJOYING THIS, ACTUALLY. ALSO JULY 4TH YOU THINK ELLIS ISLAND WOULD BE CLOSED? IDK. I DON'T EVEN CARE. LALALALALALAAAAAAA.

Present! Well, I disagree with everything Gwen is doing, but at least she's being smart about it, tying Jack's legs.

I TOLD YOU Jack would turn himself over! I'm going to forgive Gwen for being irrational, because it's her family, and if someone took my family I would be insane and irrational as well.

Inna church! I don't know an awful lot about Catholicism, but this is actually a much better acknowledgment than the debacle I was fearing from Esther.

WAIT, 700 YEARS SINCE CONFESSION? I don't....Jack's timeline makes very little sense most of the time. It's also annoying when I try to sort it out in my head, and then this happens. (WAIT. Is this...after COE? O.O)

Jack was involved in the prohibition underground and this is just getting better and better and yay!!

(Also, the way Jack keeps American-pornouncing Anwen is mildly hilarious.)

LOOK AT THE HATS. THE HAAAAATS. \o/ And smoking! The smoking is accurate!

Jack is leaving. Ooooh, Jack is getting unhappy and he gets MEAN when he's angry! And he's obviously chafing a little bit at the standardized homophobia. I still like Angelo.

HOLY SHITE WE HAVE A MENTION OF THE DOCTOR. EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeee. AND JACK IS DRAWING ANALOGIES TO HIMSELF! YES, YES, YES!! (This is obviously going to end badly. Dammit.)

MOAR WRITSTRAP SUPAPOWERS. Look! Shady NYC politics! :D

Alien parasite. Ew. Ewewewewewwww.

The Tracers Brigade!? OMG, is this taking place during Jack's Missing Time Post-COE? PLEASE? RUN! RUNRUNRUN!!

Can you tell I'm enjoying this? And now Jack is going to die. Aaaaand come back. Poor Angelo doesn't know that yet. *hugs Angelo*

GO GET ANGELO, JACK. GO. GO. GO.

I think Jack must have built an immunity to getting shot in the head. He comes back so quickly!

And now Torchwood is toxic.

Gwen's confession about how Torchwood is really horrible and how she thrives on the way it makes her feel. Wow, wow, wow. It's brilliant. (What is up with this death like dog thing???)

I still don't like the Jack and Gwen animosity here. Because Jack has been trying for mortality for aaaages, you think he'd be more OK with dying. I mean, at the same time, he must be more terrified.

ANGELO IS GETTING OUT OF SING-SING. LOOK AT JACK'S FINALLY ACCURATE CLOTHES. LOOKIT. LOOKIT. (Jack, did you leave Angelo there? Couldn't even bail him out? Seriously? I mean, nice coming back and all, but seriously?)

So how are you going to explain this, Jack? Oh, oh, oh. Angelo....oh. SHITE. RUN, JACK. Never mind the Master, this...this might be worse. Because Jack's really, truly alone here. And it's post-Torchwood experimentation also. Jack knows exactly how awful being immortal can be. They have really played on that trope, between Torchwood the first time. the Master, buried alive, buried in concrete....considering that Jack is a cornerstone of the Torchwood franchise, I actually don't think it can be overdone. This is the most gruesome depiction we've seen on-screen, though.

Hey, we found the triangle! And it's not a deathly hallow!

Back to Gwen and Jack, waiting. Aw, there are nice things out there. That's a subplot I really like about this series. I mean, there are things out there that are beautiful, but we saw very few of them in the old series, and Gwen opened with a nice story to Anwen. The positives are also out there in the universe.

Back to the past. So, Angelo regretted what he did. That's...something. But Jack has to go turn onto that roof.

ARGH ANACHRONISTIC CLOTHES AGAIN. YES, I LIKE THE COAT TOO. BUT IT DOESN'T EXIST YET. ARGH ARGH ARGH.

Jack's a fixed point...did he know that before the Doctor told him that?

LOOK. JACK IS LEAVING SOMEONE. Again.

NYC skyline! That....doesn't look far enough to die, actually. But we know Jack recovers pretty quickly from falling from heights. So, I guess it works.

Present again! Look, it's THREE people. The triangle!

And Rex and Esther did something right. Love ya. And they got a SWAT tam to get the Cooper family! Andy got an upgrade! He's been the token Welsh Police Force since the beginning, hasn't he?

Well, we knew it was going to be Angelo at the end, because they hadn't made a connection to Angelo yet. Inevitable, really.

***

It's post-COE Jack, right? I mean, 700 years old? Wearing an RAF coat that hasn't been invented? (Someone correct me if I'm wrong on that.) It seems like it must be a post-COE Jack. Waaaay post-COE, if we're talking 700 years. He's mourned Ianto, but he's still closed-off in some ways.

He's hopping around Earth and using Torchwood to go places he shouldn't be going while avoiding himself. I always assumed they kept Jack on a short enough leash that he wouldn't be able to get to America on his own, and you'd think they could just have papers made if they wanted him there, no need to forge. You could even use it to explain why his wriststrap has a magic upgrade. Some things make more sense if it's linear-timeline Jack, but the theory seems waaaaaay too solid. I'm probably about 75% convinced, unless proven otherwise. Fic, obviously, could go either way. That's fanfiction. :)
