I consider the profit-system the true "killer app" of Dreamwidth, not a bug concern. Have you seen the posts one of the site-owners did way back at the start about why DW would never be ad-supported? They're fantastic and I can probably find the links if you haven't.
Places to meet people... yeah, communities haven't taken off in the same way that they did on LJ, and none of us have ever been sure of why.
