eldabeOk, before I say anything else!
1 - I've read very, very few X-Men comic books. Certainly never read Days of Future Past. (XMEN COMICS ARE THE MOST TWISTED LABYRINTH DISASTER AREA OF STORYTELLING HOLY MOLY.)
2 - I've not seen the original X-trilogy movies in a while. (I'm putting this up before my rewatch on purpose.)
3 - I've only seen the X-Men: Days of Future Past trailer a few times. I have not looked up rumors and I checked the IMDB page once. I've found the I generally enjoy movies more when I walk into them less spoilered. (But I haven't avoided things either. I just don't spend a lot of my internet time in those spaces.)
So my opinions below are my own and exist within these contexts.
I've been drafting this post since January. And it's complicated, but here's the short part: I'm a little displeased with this movie.
It all boils down to this: I adored First Class. And what I really want is a sequel to First Class. Instead I'm getting the giant Singer nerd epic. And don't get me wrong, I like nerd epics. But I want a sequel MORE.
See, there were a few elements that really stuck out to me in First Class. Their dedication to telling a solid story regardless of canon (some things didn't quiiiite line up with established movie canon, or even any comic canon I know.) The fairly straightforward acknowledgment of the parallels to the civil rights movement. The amount of women and POC (although that one backfired on them a lot, but points for effort in Hollywood.) And my favorite is that Charles is a total jerk-face. He's such a snot! And it's so perfect!
First Class was a fabulous origin film for an ensemble cast, in my 100% amateur opinion. It built up a bunch of possible storylines and left lots of dangling bits for a sequel, some of which fandom has absolutely latched on to.
Days of Future Past on the other hand, looks like an opportunity to bring back Jackman, McKellan and Stewart in another big film. And I'm excited to see them! But I would MUCH RATHER see Moira again, and IMDB seems pretty confident that she's not in the film at all. :/ I want to see Raven and Charles talk. Or yell at each other! I want to see follow-up to Charles being in the wheelchair. I want to see Charles building the school. I want to see Alex finding Scott and find out more about Sean and watch Hank figure out how secondary mutations work in the movie!verse. I want to see more lady mutants and more POC mutants and maybe some on-screen LGBTQ mutants. Maybe fewer white men that I don't even 'ship?
I dunno. I am SUPER EXCITED to see the film in theaters! I'm really curious how this is going to direct the fandom! I want to hear everything![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
pocky_slash is going to say! I just wish this was, like, the third movie and we were getting a real sequel to First Class instead?
(Luckily, fandom is probably going to fill all the gaps. YES I'VE BEEN READING FIRST CLASS FIC OK? I ran out of Inception stuff and I needed a distraction from my life. I would like moar Raven and Charles as siblings kthanxbye.)
So…yeah. All that said, L. and I are planning a full X-film rewatch over the next few weeks to prep for the movie. Because I AM STILL EXCITED OK. I JUST NEEDED TO GET THIS ALL OUT THERE.
Also, I think the makeup and costuming teams team did a WONDERFUL JOB. We get Erik in his ridiculous get-up but I adoooore angry!hippie!Charles. :D :D :D
