GUYS. YESTERDAY'S XKCD WAS ABOUT ANIMORPHS. How is XKCD so consistently perfect?
Animorphs was, for all I can recall, my first fandom. Animorphs was where I discovered ff.net. Animorphs was where I sat on the bus to school daily and played what if what if? with a fellow geeky schoolmate. Animorphs was the book I was reading when I was challenged in the lunchroom for reading "kiddie books" and Animorphs was the series I defended hotly.
Animorphs was the book I wrote about in my college admission essay. My Animorph books (and Megamorphs, Alternamorphs, and Chronicles) are all in a box in the my parent's attic, because I wouldn't let them be thrown away. I want to read them to my children so I can explain the AOL expy and LOL forever.
Animorphs starred a diverse group of teenagers trying to save the world. And you know what? They are barely making it. They are flunking school and dealing with too-little sleep and some freaky crazy stuff. Animorphs was a kids book about war, death, PTSD and moral struggles. They were funny and sad and heartbreaking and hopeful and sometimes absolutely insane. (Yeerks are addicted to instant maple and ginger oatmeal. Who comes up with this stuff??)
Hearts everywhere for Animorphs forever. ♥♥♥
…except the TV show. I'm completely meh on the TV show except that I refer to Shawn Ashmore as "Jake" 90% of the time. JAKE WAS PRETTY GOOD IN X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST.
