eldabeSo, I've recently watched almost all of Smash (skipped a few early episodes) and it's a pretty bad show and I'm by the end Tom and Sam are basically the only two sympathetic characters and they're being used to reinforce heteronormative relationship standards, but I'm ADDICTED*. I love the hyperreality of musicals, and this thing has the same over-the-top appeal as Glee (but without the sarcastic wit) and fun musical numbers and I'm just another fan of Marliyn Monroe. I wish a million things about it were different, and I don't feel we are seeing what it's even remotely like to make a real musical, but you all know I'm a fan of crack TV. I can't recommend it at all, but it's free on Hulu for all those of you in the USA and it's great background for doing the dishes.
And fine, the songs are quite good on their own. Those clips are worth watching.
(And I'm Team Ivy when she's not trying to physically sabotage anyone. But my favorite character might be the stage manager. Her expressions are fantastic.)
*Fine, and Eileen. I actually really like her entire story line.
ETA: And this review referred to Karen as a Mary Sue! She's not, at least party because she's not a self-insert (JULIA, on the other hand...) or a fanfic character, but seeing fandom terms in the mainstream tickles my funnybone.
