I saw Frozen in theaters on Thanksgiving, and while it had flaws, I have already heavily recommended it to a few people.
I would like to take this moment to say that when I first heard Disney was making an adaptation, ALL I WANTED IN THE WORLD was a story in which two perfectly ordinary children are caught it a terrifying magical adventure. The story of how Gerda goes and saves Kai with nothing but THE STRENGTH OF HER OWN CONVICTION. (They could have cut the religion and the "purity" aspect and I would have been ok with that, but the actions of the story alone were all "I WILL GO DO THIS THING." So much <3)
In the original Gerda was helped the whole time by women. That story would have crushed the Bechdel test.
And for better or worse, the original story would not have been a princess movie.*shrug*
This movie, however, won me over in three scenes:
1- Let it Go, the big Menzel number. It has stayed in my head for days. In a single song we got Elsa's entire transition from runaway panic to delightful embracing of her powers and the feelings are palpable. Glorious.
2 - The true Love moment was THE TRUE LOVE BETWEEN SIBLINGS. EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS IS A YES. I WAS FISTPUMPING IN THE THEATER. (This is the most important one. There were a bunch fun twists in this movie, but this moment MADE IT.)
3 - Kristoff ASKS Anna permission to kiss her at the end. ASDFHJKL.
It has nothing to do with the original story. Then again, it probably has more to do with Norway than the Thor movie. /snerk.
At best, I was frustrated by the Trolls. They were not helpful and were the main reason Elsa spent her whole life scared and alone. Before them, no one seemed to care that she had powers. ("Born with it or cursed?" was a GREAT LINE though.) Then they terrified a little girl and her family, never provided alternate support or suggestions and then delayed Anna and Kristoff when Anna was dying. Really?
It tasted like Tangled. It felt very much in that vein, and the songs were similar and also it involved little girls being locked up until they are older. (That is a theme I wouldn't mind not seeing so often.) Anna clambered over everything like Rapunzel, and the art sometimes felt very familiar. In a good way!
Would read fic. Would write fic, speaking of. How did Elsa avoid Anna for that many years? Hmmmmm.

Date: Dec. 2nd, 2013 19:04 (UTC)Seanan McGuire mentioned on Twitter (I think) that casting Idina Menzel as Elsa, and doing a number like "Let it Go," was like realizing you have a Ferrari and taking it out for one glorious full-throttle ride. It was perfect.

Date: Dec. 3rd, 2013 20:12 (UTC)That is a great way to describe "Let it Go." Guh, I already downloaded the song and keep listening to it on repeat and stopping in the middle of the sidewalk and just flailing a little bit. So perfect.
